"Rich and poor have this in common: The LORD is the Maker of them all.” - Proverbs 22:2
Comparisons are neither kind nor constructive but we all get caught in the comparison trap. Comparisons either leaves you feeling superior, or inferior and neither are acceptable. God didn’t knit you to live someone else’s life, he created you for your life and to serve a unique purpose.
Comparisons can go one of two ways, one can leave you feeling less than enough, or you end up judging someone else’s flaws. Whichever side of the scale you hit, comparisons are an unhealthy trap that we need to free ourselves from. We are all guilty of comparing ourselves to other people. Scrolling through social media and seeing something that is #goals can set us into what I like to call “the comparison trap”.
On social media we are all connected at all times of the day. We see the highlights of other peoples lives. We see the Instagram worthy vacations, smiling faces, happy moments, we see the parts of life people choose to share with the world. What we don’t see are the struggles they face, the tears they cry and the real life issues they deal with everyday. NO ONE LIVES A PERFECT LIFE! We are all broken, messy and at times frankly uncomposed and a tad crazy.
Comparisons are truly unfair because you never know the struggles someone is facing and although their life may seem so much better than yours, its not. Life is messy and you have a front row seat to watch your own life unfold, to you your flaws are magnified but others don’t see them that way. When you look at someone and wish that you had their lives, you are challenging the wonderful life that God gave you and you are questioning him.
There is an old saying that goes something along the lines of “Walk a mile in their shoes,” but God didn’t have you walk a mile in someone else’s shoes he put you in your shoes and on your path for a purpose. God didn’t create you to live the same life as the person you compare yourself with, he created you to be you!
On this Earth you are the only one who has walked the path God has called you to lead and you are the only one who can serve the purpose he has given for your life. No one else has had the same experiences, cried the same tears and smiled at the same moments. Everything you go through and all the brokenness in your life is the path God has called you to walk on. He knows you better than you know yourself, and he always knows what is best for you. This life you live is wonderful and although there are tough moments, it’s the life that God has blessed you with. Don’t let qualities you compare with other people leave you feeling inferior because you are wonderful and unique in your own ways.
When the scale tips and you hit a side of comparisons that leave a feeling of superiority that is just as unsafe as feeling inferior. God created us all equally, no matter what world factors there are, we are all equal. Everything and everyone was created by God!
